The Main Library will be hosting a massive sale on books, CDs, and DVDs starting at just $1 πβ€οΈ
Hello Tuesday. It's James.
If you're like me, and you'd rather spend your money on books than on, you know, life necessities, this news will be right up your alley. The Columbus Main Library will be hosting their annual book sale Thursday-Sunday. You have to be a Friend of the library to participate on Thursday, but there are deals to be had even as late as Sunday, when you can fill up an entire bag for just $5.
Just how many books can one fit in a tote? I might have to find out.

Around Town πHigh school football participation in Ohio is down 23% in the last 8 years. Over 42,000 high schoolers still play, but it seems to be a clear trend. Overall sports participation has actually increased nationally in that time. The director of The National Federation of State High School Associations thinks the trend is due to athletes choosing to focus on one sport, but that seems like obvious spin. The OHSAA spokesman quoted in this article says the obvious: that it's due to increased education around the issue of concussions. [WOSU/Brown]Voice of America (yes, the United States international broadcaster originally formed to combat WW2 Nazi propaganda) visits the Northland area of Columbus to report on a part of the city that has been revitalized by immigrants. Highly recommended click about an area of the city that flies under the radar of most local media. [VOA News]Republican gubernatorial candidates participated in a forum Sunday night at a Baptist church, discussing their competing visions for Ohio. Takeaways include that Secretary of State Jon Husted is mad at Governor Kasich for "undermining" Donald Trump, Jim Renacci wants to weaken unions, and Mary Taylor would not be in favor of any additional gun restrictions following the Las Vegas shooting, and also thinks the Ohio Department of Taxation shouldn't pursue back taxes or penalties for people who, uh, don't pay their state taxes. Mike DeWine came across as the elder statesmen, and in a normal political environment would be the obvious front runner. However, in these times, who knows? [Dispatch/Ludlow]

Longread βοΈYesterday was Columbus Day. One of the most illuminating and fascinating articles I've ever read on the New World was this look at what it looked like before Columbus arrived. This article was eventually expanded, and became a best selling book. Before it became the New World, the Western Hemisphere was vastly more populous and sophisticated than has been thoughtβan altogether more salubrious place to live at the time than, say, Europe. New evidence of both the extent of the population and its agricultural advancement leads to a remarkable conjecture: the Amazon rain forest may be largely a human artifactThe Atlantic: 1491
