Welcome to Election Day 2018. It's James.

Is Columbus known for its diners? I'm not sure. But maybe we just don't talk about them enough.

There are plenty of well-loved examples, but it can feel at times like people hoard their favorite, in a way you don't see with other kinds of restaurants. I think there's something personal about a good diner, the way it can feel like a home base, particularly when you go often enough to feel like a regular.

All that's understandable, but we're not about keeping secrets at Columbus Navigator. This spot has one of the best signs in Columbus, it's on the city's historic register, and it's as authentically Columbus as anything, anywhere. Check it out.

I sometimes feel like an unpaid evangelist for Aldi. If you haven't ever been, you should go, and if you haven't been in a long time, you should ... also go. It's changed from a place that felt very discount grocery store to a really interesting retail experience. Most of the store stays the same week to week, but there's a rotating component that is sort of bizarre and fun, while also being super useful, and that's where this wine advent calendar comes in. There's also apparently a cheese version, which is also promising.

Talking Points ❀️

Getting around today will be cheap ...

Seemingly everyone wants to help you get to the polls today. Lots of discounts: Scooters, Uber (promo code: VOTE2018), Lyft (promo code: VOTEOH1), and bike sharing (CoGO promo code: BIKETOVOTE and Lime promo code: LIME2VOTE18). COTA is not offering discounted rides, which is a shame when comparing to transit systems like LA's, Houston's, Dallas', and Tampa's, all of which are offering free rides today.

About Issue 1 ...

In my conversations recently, I have noticed this seems to be the toughest item on the ballot for many people. The Kirwan Institute at OSU put out a 16-page explainer that's a surprisingly accessible read. Key takeaways: Ohio prisons are at 130% of capacity and we spend $1.8 billion annually on incarceration. This is happening while we are at a 30 year low for violent crime in the state. The Kirwan Institute guide provides data particularly from looking at what has happened in other states that have passed measures similar to Issue 1. If you feel unsure, this will give you information to help you make up your mind, without telling you how to vote.

Early voting numbers are in ...

Franklin County saw a large surge in early voting compared to 2014 (150k this vs. 100k in 2014) but numbers were down compared to 2016 (150k vs. 225k in 2016). Election day turnout is probably still the key in Ohio vs. other states where some of the focus has moved to early voting.
