Under The Radar: Smaller Ohio Cities Are Showing Up For Racial Justice ❤️

Columbus Donut Week

Columbus Donut Week is a week-long city-wide celebration of the donuts of Columbus and the people who make them, sponsored by Pure Equity Group. It takes place the week of national donut day (June 1-7) and this year we are excited to support Service! Relief Kitchen. For more details click here! 🍩🍩

Happy Thursday. Chelsea here.

If I asked you to picture the recent protests, chances are what comes to mind is a view of a large city, like downtown Columbus, Cleveland or Cincinnati. But across Ohio, much smaller communities are coming together to fight for equality and racial justice. From small rural towns to medium-sized cities, Ohioans are making it clear that we won't stand by while our fellow Americans suffer any longer.

Talking Points ❤️

Police Unions 🚨

I keep hearing again and again that the Columbus police union is a roadblock towards common-sense reform locally. Mayor Ginther seemingly doesn't believe he has the political capital to push back, probably because in Columbus, like most major cities, mayors and council members do not get elected without police union support. This article goes into that and much much more with many notes from other cities that I found absolutely wild.

Further 🚨

Something I take no pleasure in saying - our mayor and police chief are getting caught in lies and half-truths. It's almost as if they are running a public relations campaign straight out of the playbook from the days before social media and cell phone cameras. The latest:

Listening ❤️

I loved this tweet

from Adam Lehman, co-owner of

on stores and businesses downtown:

People outside the city keep saying “I feel for those businesses.” If that’s true, then.... Listen to the businesses (and owners who live in these neighborhoods) when they say “we're fine, go listen to the protestors.”

In that spirit, here is an essay from Dionte Johnson, owner of Sole Classics, which was vandalized on Friday, May 29th.
