Welcome to Thursday, it's Tracie.
It seems like every week there's a new story about the scooter epidemic terrorizing the city. I really feel like that's not an exaggeration. We went to a Clipper's game the other day, and encountered no less than 10 groups of manned scooters, hurtling through traffic. This isn't to say that I have a problem with scooters, I think conceptually, it's a pretty rad idea ๐.
Maybe it's the parent in me, but I'm startled by the fact that none of the riders I've seen are wearing helmets. In traffic. C'mon people, protect your melon! Thankfully, Mayor Ginther and city officials are working to create legislation that might both encourage this greener form of transportation, and alleviate some of the headaches they're causing ๐ฎ.

If you went to grade school in Columbus, you probably have memories of touring the American Whistle Corporation, and getting to check out their factory. That was cool and all, but why didn't more of our academic travels revolve around food? Fear not, you're never too old for a little field trip.

Pointing out the fact that this house was built in the 70s really isn't necessary, just look at the pictures, trust me. I'm getting some "airport control tower" vibes as well. Groovy.

In their series, Curious Cbus, WOSU takes a dive into Columbusโ history by asking the question โWhy Does Columbus Have So Many LGBTQ People?โ Spoiler: Itโs not about Columbus at all. Itโs about the supportive and loving community that grew here. ๐ญ [WOSU]The first concrete street in the United States was poured in 1891, just a stone's throw away in Bellefontaine, Ohio. ๐ธ [Broad&High]It's officially Buckeyes season ๐ starting Saturday, and 614Now has let us in on the 5 best campus bars ๐บ for the not-so-college student crowd. Crazy Rich Asians once again led the Box Office, and while I loved the book, and plan to see the movie, some critics are questioning whether the diverse cast really only goes skin-deep. While the Asian characters in the film are able to smash some overwrought Hollywood stereotypes, the issue of cultural appropriation, specifically by Awkwafina's Peik Lin, can't be ignored.Appropriation is a tricky thing in the 21st century, yet it has somehow grown only more clichรฉd in public conversation. Ever since Miley Cyrus the minstrel twerked up on Robin Thicke (another minstrel) onstage at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, the simple observation of appropriation has proven enough to serve as an analysis of the appropriative gesture itself. The very fact that something cultural now resides in two places at onceโin the traditions and communal enclaves of black folks; on the body of a white or nonblack personโ(allegedly) implicates the latter as the thief who cherry-picked from outside for material gain.Slate: Who Really Owns The "Blaccent?"
