Burgers, opera, curling lessons and free pumpkins ππ
Happy Monday, Columbus. β€οΈ
Columbus Navigator recently hit our six month anniversary. We've had a blast showing off this city that we love. Some background: Columbus Navigator is a locally owned, independently operated news site. We have big plans, and want to do greater things, but first we need to reach more people! If you have enjoyed what we've done so far, and want to help support local, independent news, here's how you can help.
Not too crazy an ask, right? Any of the above is a colossal help at this stage of our journey. Have any ideas on what you would like to see us cover, or changes we should make to the site or newsletter? We love suggestions and feedback.
Ok, that's out of the way, and now we can get on to what's happening in Columbus this first week of fall (not that you'd know we've moved on from summer with these temps.) It's a full week, and here's what we've picked out as the best of the best going on in Columbus.
15 Things To Do In And Around Columbus This Week
π
Monday
Enjoy one of the best yearly food events.
It's Burgers and Beer week from (614) Magazine. Over 75 Columbus restaurants will be offering $6 burgers and beer specials. Runs Monday through Saturday, so you'll have plenty of opportunities for discovering new favorites. Hit the link to see a list of all participating restaurants.
Tuesday
See indie rock group Manchester Orchestra.
CD102.5 brings the Atlanta indie group to town. They're touring for the latest album
A Black Mile to the Surface
. The group also recently did the soundtrack to the Danielle Radcliffe film
Swiss Army Man
, which was pretty trippy. Both the film and the soundtrack.
Wednesday
Get some culture, and see some opera.
Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday will see Britten's
The Turn of the Screw
performed at Southern Theater. Columbus Symphony will be performing, and the opera will be sung in English. This is a nice introductory opera for those new to the experience, with a great story based on the creepy classic from Henry James.
Thursday
Learn the Winter Olympic sport that you tell yourself looks doable every four years.
Columbus Curling Club is hosting a Learn To Curl clinic. The two hour intro to the sport includes lessons on how to throw and sweep a rock, call shots, and you get to play a short game. Who knows, could be a new lifelong hobby ... and maybe those Olympic dreams are still in play. If Thursday doesn't work for you, they also have a session on Sunday afternoon.
Friday
Discover some companies doing good in the world and drink some beer.
The North Market is hosting the Festival for Good, an event that showcases 25 local social enterprises, entertainment, food from North Market vendors, and drinks from Ohio breweries, distilleries, and wineries. What's a social enterprise? A company that uses commercial strategies to improve lives and situations. The lineup for this is very cool and full of interesting local companies that will probably be new to you. This event takes place both Friday and Saturday, and all proceeds go to benefit the North Market and Festival for Good.
See the best Led Zeppelin cover band on earth.
Zoso - the Ultimate Led Zeppelin Experience has been recreating Led Zeppelin shows since 1995, in playing style, sound, and even look. They even play vintage instruments and use authentic Led Zeppelin imagery from 70's concerts. Kind of the ultimate in nostalgia if you saw the band in the 70's, or, alternatively, an opportunity to recreate the experience if you weren't around to witness Zepp during their glory days.
Saturday
Geek out for video games.
GDEX, taking place Saturday and Sunday, is the Midwest's largest video gaming expo and will feature tons of upcoming games, tournaments, speakers, game industry sessions, and vendors.
Watch a living comedy legend.
John Cleese is visiting Ohio Theatre. He will first be screening, in its entirety,
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
, and then will speak and take questions from the audience.
Score a free pumpkin.
Columbus Recreation and Parks is hosting Fall Harvest Jamboree at Smith Farm. There will be free pumpkins, arts and crafts, horseback rides, a climbing wall, and lots of farm themed games.
Or check out the fall fest that benefits Children's Hospital.
Pumpkinpalooza will have hayrides, bounce houses, a pumpkin patch, fishing, games, a carousel, and much more. Proceeds benefit the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit in support of music therapy for children and adolescents.
Listen to Turn the Page and Like a Rock live.
Did you know Bob Seger is finally on Spotify? I became aware he was boycotting from this surprisingly fascinating article on the economics of streaming and how only a small number of albums actually get remembered:
That was written in May of this year and later this summer Seger's catalog came to streaming services. Seger is one of those staples of classic rock that seemed in danger of ultimately being forgotten, but here he comes to Columbus, seemingly with it and ready to roll with the new economics of music.
See English indie rock band Glass Animals.
The group has played at seemingly every festival in existence, and is touring behind their second album,
How to be a Human Being
.
Experience the madness of Hello Kitty fandom.
The Hello Kitty truck is coming to Easton. We have you covered on
. Lots of good cakes, and a priceless photo op if you're a Hello Kitty die hard.
Watch the Crew take on DC United.
Only three games left for our Crew, and this is the last home game of the year. Columbus remains in a prime playoff position after beating New York Red Bulls 3-2 on Saturday night.
SundayExperience a coffee lover's nirvana.
Columbus Underground is hosting Columbus Coffee Fest 2017 and will have every coffee vendor you can think of present as well as great food vendors, a maker tent featuring coffee themed items, and live music.
Monday Weather π‘

(Yikes) Mostly sunny. π€

Chelsea spots an opportunity for the budding actresses out there. The Broadway show
Waitress
is coming to town in November, and the production is holding auditions looking for two actresses.
Does this map sum up Clintonville or nah?
We're past the weekend now, but file this one away for the next time you're ticking the box on one of the drunken situations.
Longread π΅οΈββοΈEveryone who has been on the internet awhile has heard of Snopes, probably the earliest online fact checker. In the late 90's it was invariably one of the first sites a new internet user became acquainted with - back then it seemed to deal entirely with urban legends and weird email forwards. Lately, it has moved into politics, which has led partisan factions to attack the site, inevitably labeling it "fake news".This comes at a real moment of weakness for the site, as the founders have gotten divorced, and a behind the scenes legal battle has ensued. It gets a little tawdry, but the behind the scenes look at an internet institution that has never revealed much about itself is compelling.Wired: Snopes and the Search for Facts in a Post-Fact World
Have fun this week. - Columbus Navigator
