Hello Monday. It's James.

A Fox News poll on gun control

, and given the outlet you may find the results surprising.

91% favor universal background checks, 84% favor mental health checks, 72% want to see the legal age to own a firearm raised to 21, and 60% want to see assault weapons banned. (69% also want to see armed guards in schools, so it's not all surprising.)

I bring this up as a precursor to talking about the "March For Our Lives" that took place on Saturday morning here in Columbus (and in cities across the country.) The conversation following the Parkland school shootings is often being presented by the media as a typical "Red vs. Blue" debate over ideas, but the issues on the table are not that divisive. The 2nd Amendment isn't under attack, and the vast majority of Americans favor common sense gun laws. It is generally difficult to get this many Americans to agree on anything, let alone something seen as divisive. The problem really seems to boil down to the NRA and gun manufacturers purchasing politicians (on both sides of the aisle) who then become too cowardly to take the right actions on gun laws - laws their constituents want.

People are tired of special interest groups and the gun lobby being viewed by politicians as more important than victims of gun violence. On Saturday, many of those people rallied and marched in downtown Columbus, and we were there. Here is our resulting photo essay.

Monday Weather 🌑54 and mostly sunny. 🌀It looks like we are turning a corner this week, temps wise at least, with highs in the 50s and 60s.

Navigator Originals βœοΈODNR Wants You To Stay In The Hiking Loop With Online PortalOk, now that we are through with that heavy opener, back to your regularly scheduled daily newsletter. This is super timely with the warmer temps - ODNR has launched a pretty great online portal to answer all of your Ohio related hiking questions. There are printable maps as well as an events guide. Side note, did you know Ohio has more than 3,000 miles of trails? One (the Buckeye Trail) even meanders around the entire state, totaling 1,400 miles.Ohio Accepting Physician Applications To Prescribe Medical MarijuanaDespite a fair number of stumbling blocks, the September 8th start date for Ohio medical marijuana is still a go. In the newest step forward, Ohio is now accepting physician applications for prescribing medical marijuana.

Around Town 🏘This complaint feels very late 90's, but a pair of writers in the Lantern points out that Ohio State's turning into suburbia. Compared to when I was at OSU, this feels like something that happened long ago, but it's timely again as Ohio State moves in to "update" the 17th and College area. [The Lantern]Alt.eats.columbus shares that they are often asked "Does Columbus have any "Real" Chinese food?" After a short discussion of what "real" means (authentic, and alt.eats.columbus graciously points out they don't have the authority to designate any restaurant as authentic), they have put together a list that "distinguish[es] the restaurants that are cooking menu items for the Chinese palate from those that are not". They claim it's a work in progress, but you can see the careful curation that's happened here. [alt.eats.columbus]And in more food news, Breakfast With Nick is here with 13 brunch options for the Spring brunch season. [Breakfast With Nick]The Crew are still undefeated after beating DC United 3-1 on Saturday. They look extremely tough this year, but there's a pall over the entire thing (which I discussed here among a larger point of how clearly Crew ownership is sabotaging fan relations in Columbus.) Michael Arace has an editorial in the Dispatch about how insulting and absurd the situation is that a sports franchise owner and the commissioner of what's touted as a major sports league are conspiring against a major American city.
