11 Columbus Gifts That’ll Make Someone Happy To Stay Inside All Winter β„οΈπŸŽ

Columbus Navigator Logo

Happy Monday. It's James.

Sunday was ridiculously nice, wasn't it?

Well, we're headed back to reality this week. Winter came early this year in November, and even though Sunday shows it hasn't fully set in yet, I am still freezing to death on the regular. That's why I'm grateful Chelsea has put together this gift guide on local gifts that'll make someone happy to stay inside all winter. Anyone who has my name this Christmas, please click.

I have a soft spot for literally all of these that I've been to - last winter my family went to Butch Bando's, and it way over delivered. I was expecting a tourist trap-ish, 5-minute car tour, but no. And is it just me, or is the Scioto Mile getting better every year?

I'm not sure how common this piece of wisdom is, but I know I've heard that Columbus is only as big as it is because of all the annexation. This is a great deep dive on just how true that it, and what it looks like today for Columbus population growth.

It's kind of a niche thing to be known for, but I'm not sure there better cities in America if you are into board games than Columbus. Between the massive gaming conference we put on every summer, to these board gaming spots, the situation is extremely covered.

Talking Points ❀️

So close, again...

Ohio State finished their regular season by winning the Big Ten Championship Saturday night, but it wasn't quite enough for the college football playoffs. The consolation prize is pretty nice though. We'll get to see them in the Rose Bowl for the first time in a decade, where they'll take on the Washington Huskies. Ohio State

. 🏈

So shines a good deed in a weary world...

New Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose (R) wants everyone to simmer down on elections. He's the rare Republican who admits voter fraud is overstated by Republicans and has said he doesn't want to purge election rolls. LaRose thinks that sort of talk (along with talk of voter suppression, which I think is tougher to handwave away) is undermining confidence in elections.

Our loss is

the nation's gain

...

Columbus Crew will need to find a new head coach, as Gregg Berhalter has been named the new head coach of the US Men's National Team. I look forward to seeing Berhalter work his magic at the national level, but he'll be missed.

Once I made you rich enough, Rich enough to forget my name...

This essay, by Vince Guerrieri, is all you really need to read about GM pulling out of Lordstown, Ohio.

An artsy gift guide...

Our gift guide roundups continue, and this time it's Wexner Center For The Arts. That scarf is pretty great.

Promising restaurant news...

Two longtime Barcelona chefs have left the restaurant and will be opening their own place at 247 King Ave. That's the old Angry Baker location. It'll be named Alqueria, and they are aiming for a January open.
