Happy Friday! Chelsea here.

One of my favorite things in Columbus has officially reopened. Otherworld is back with four new rooms and new safety protocols for visitors. If you haven't had the chance to check it out yet, please do yourself a favor and grab some tickets. It's utterly fantastic and a great way to spend the afternoon with the whole family.

It's hard to imagine the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium without Jack Hanna, but that's the reality that we're in for come December. The long time director and director emeritus announced his upcoming retirement yesterday. We thought it would be fun to take a look back at some of the iconic late-night appearances that Jungle Jack became known for through the years.

Yesterday, the HeartBeat Movement, an advocacy organization focused on protecting Black lives through improved community-police relations, was one of the only groups to host a formal protest outside the Statehouse.

Stepping Down 🥼

Dr. Amy Acton announced Thursday that she is stepping down as Ohio Health Department Director. Governor DeWine praised her at his daily press conference saying "

Dr. Acton’s extraordinary bedside manner and wise counsel have helped us all get through this pandemic

" and "

No one that I've ever met has more passion for helping people, has more passion for public health than Dr. Amy Acton ... She's always put the health of Ohioans first.

A Thoroughly 2020 Thing To Have Happen 🐦

It's hard to wrap my head around the fact that our president at times uses his Twitter account to call out random American citizens (before the Trump enamored in the audience hit the reply button, realize that it's not a partisan statement to say it's a weird thing. And it is. Very weird.) and here's a story of a local Columbus citizen who just went through it, including what came next and what it has meant for his life.

Barbara Shermund Exhibit

Sponsored by Decorative Arts Center of Ohio which is proud to present a Virtual Tour of Tell Me a Story Where the Bad Girl Wins: The Life & Art of Barbara Shermund. Starting in 1925, Shermund contributed nine covers and hundreds of cartoons to the New Yorker, and later became a celebrated mainstay at Esquire. Her cartoons had a fierce and feminist electricity rarely seen in that era of male-dominated cartooning. Learn more and take the tour right here! 💥💥

The conversation is already underway on

that have been created downtown and in the Short North. There are over 100 works and Columbus art leaders are working to make sure they are preserved in some way. Some businesses want to keep "their" mural, and auctions are being discussed as a possibility, with the proceeds subsequently donated to social justice organizations.

It feels like a strange conversation to have right now (albeit, necessary) given we don't know yet how these works of art will feel and present in the future. If Columbus doesn't use this moment in history to drastically reform its policing, the murals are going to be hollow signifiers of a moment when a great deal of black community pain was expressed with no answer other than paint on plywood.
