Navigator Originals:Smoked On High In The Brewery District Will Be The Next Big Thing In Local BBQ [Miller]Columbus has some solid local BBQ, but I'll take as many BBQ options as Columbus restauranteurs want to toss at me. I'm not sure it's possible for me to love this concept that places a restaurant in a brick Brewery District two story house (check out the woodwork on the staircase!) any more. Can't wait to try. When Scare Tactics Didn’t Work, The City Of Columbus Killed 250 Geese [Wiley]I'm not even taking a stance on this, although it's sure to be divisive, but the absurdity of the situation is hard to ignore. The State Wants To Buy A Huge Amount Of Land From AEP [Jaara]The purchase of 60,000 acres of reclaimed strip mines is being viewed as a once in a lifetime opportunity. Ohio is looking to purchase it in parcels over a number of years, and it will continue being used as recreational land. Dr. Dan Good Announces Retirement From Columbus City Schools [Wiley]Dr. Good came in during a difficult period for Columbus City Schools and seems to have been a stabilizer, at the least. The search for the next superintendent should be heavily scrutinized.

The Friday Conversation:Experts think downtown's development boom looks endless. They note that the manner in which it's happening seems more sustainable, with a mix of residential, commercial, office, and hotels as opposed to the last building boom which did not include much residential.  [Dispatch/Weiker]Columbus has exactly one domestic violence shelter, and it's undersized, but it's preparing to move into a new $15 million facility next year. The money includes investments from the city, L Brands/Wexner family, and Franklin county. The new site will be over 10 acres and will include indoor and outdoor play areas for children, office space, a large kitchen, and even a kennel so that pets won't have to be left behind in crisis situations. [Dispatch/Price]Local news in Columbus is booming (says new-ish local news site Columbus Navigator, but really, it does seem to be) - Seen Digital Media has launched a new site called 1812 Columbus. Check it out - [1812Columbus]

Longread for your lunch break:

Five hundred feet below ground with Ohio coal miners.I followed them underground, home, to church, to the strip club where they drink and gossip and taunt and jab and worry about one another. I listened while they worried about Smitty, the loner of the group, who had just ordered himself a mail-order woman.GQ: Underworld
